More West Virginians are now working in the Mountain State than at any time in recent memory. In May 2007, the state’s total employment number was 781,000. That is the highest number in the past decade, and maybe the highest number on record. The data comes from a monthly report prepared by WorkForce West Virginia.
The positive May employment number (non-farm payroll employment) was aided by the creation of 6,400 jobs, with gains of 4,600 in the service-providing sector and 1,800 in the goods-producing sector. Since May 2006, total nonfarm payroll employment in West Virginia has risen 5,600.
Another item of significant news is that West Virginia also recorded the lowest jobless rate ever during the month of May. The state’s unemployment rate declined two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.4 in May. This continues a positive trend, according to a WorkForce West Virginia press release. “Total unemployment was down 2,800 over the year.”
“Clearly, the positive changes that have been made in West Virginia over the past several years and the continued strength in the energy sector are factors in this high employment rate,” said Steve Roberts, President of the West Virginia Chamber. “Creating jobs is the number one need in our state, and it is very encouraging news that our state is moving in the right direction and more opportunities are being created for West Virginians.”
