Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
Tom Hanks
Julia Roberts
Phillip Seymour-Hoffman
What’s It About
The party never stops with Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks), the fly by night Texas senator who saves the Afghans from the Soviets in the early 1980s. Charlie Wilson teams up with a CIA Operative (Phillip Seymour-Hoffman) only to begin buying arms from Pakistan, Israel, and Saudi Arabia to give to the Afghans which eventually lead to the defeat of the Soviets. It was easy to say that Charlie Wilson did an amazing job for a country in desperate need, but by not going in after the war to help rebuild, other conflicts arise. The decisions made by the United States to not aid the aftermath of the war seemingly lead to our problems with September 11 and more importantly the Taliban.
Review
This movie was such an interesting movie to watch for me because of the actual significances that it has today. I had hardly any idea of this war until I saw this film. To me bio-films are always so much more entertaining then other movies because the viewer can see the situations in the film unfold from the eyes of one person. That’s how this movie was for me. Tom Hanks is an amazing actor, and played the part of this Senator extremely well, which makes me feel even better considering I haven’t seen Tom in anything that good in a long while. Charlie Wilson’s War is a good movie because of its historical background and also its unusual portrayal of a lifestyle that is uncommon to most U.S. Senators. The A list cast of actors kept this movie humorous throughout. Except for Julia Roberts whose Texas ascent and hair that looked only of a wig wasn’t fooling anyone. The brilliance of Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s acting is always present when he is onscreen. Every role he has ever played has been unique in its own way and just flat out fantastic. I would venture to say that if he weren’t in this movie then this movie would just be another one to throw back in the pile. So if you are interested in how the United States got into such a dog fight with terrorism then this is the exact movie to watch. It is informative, entertaining, funny, and true, which in my eyes isn’t all that bad.
