MARTINSBURG, WV - Girl Scouts of Shawnee Council, Inc. is seeking nominations from the community to honor outstanding women in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia for its Women of Distinction luncheon September 17, 2008.

The Women of Distinction event highlights the importance of positive female role models and the significance of Girl Scouting in the lives of girls. Louis Harris, a well-known researcher, author and journalist, found that “The Girl Scouts have had a direct and powerful impact on the lives of American women.” In fact, two-thirds of female members of Congress have been Girl Scouts.

Three outstanding women were honored in 2007: Maria Lorensen, Editor of The Journal; Barbara Pichot, retired Certified Public Accountant and partner in with CoxHollida; and Lara Smith, Berkeley Springs Visitor Center and President of the Morgan County School Board.

Girl Scouts of Shawnee Council is inviting local business and service organizations in Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties to nominate women who have distinguished themselves as outstanding role models for girls and women through their professional and personal achievements.

Nominations are being sought in the following categories: Arts, Business/Industry, Communications, Human Services, Professions, Public Service, Health Care, and Education. A Selection Committee not affiliated with Girl Scouts of Shawnee Council will make the final recommendations regarding honorees.

To obtain a Women of Distinction nomination packet, contact Girl Scouts of Shawnee Council at 1-888-263-8834 or download the packet at http://www.ShawneeGirlScouts.org. Nominations are due by June 1, 2008.

In addition to the presentation of our honorees, the Women of Distinction luncheon will include a special guest speaker to be announced at a later date.
