This is the first exhibit of work by Art Berkeley members at The Arts Centre. Art Berkeley, which formed in 2006, has held member exhibits at the Shenandoah Hotel, the Dunn Building (Blue Ridge CTC and County offices), and Common Ground, a store owned and operated by Art Berkeley president Judy Jeffares. Common Ground features functional and decorative work made by local artists and crafters, as well as clothing, jewelry, and other items from around the world.
Common Ground, located at 145 N. Queen Street, is also the home of the Heritage Craft Center of the Eastern Panhandle.
The Heritage Craft Center, now celebrating its tenth anniversary, offers a full schedule of classes in traditional and contemporary art forms, including stained glass, one stroke painting, jewelry making, embroidery, weaving, and woodcarving. (heritagecraftcenter.org)
The Arts Centre, originally the Boarman Art Center, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Now located in the former Post Office and Federal Building at 300 W. King Street, The Arts Centre features year-round art exhibits, adult art classes, After School Art and the Young Artists' Summer Workshops for children, and other special events. The Arts Centre also organizes the annual WV Wine & Arts Festival, scheduled for May 24 & 25 at Boydville.
The Arts Centre and Heritage Craft Center are also collaborating on Earth Day 2008, scheduled for April 19 & 20. Teachers from the Heritage Craft Center will offer classes which use natural and recycled materials, such as rag rugs and baskets. Other events scheduled for the Earth Day weekend include a papermaking class, short films, and a natural foods demo.
