The Morgan County Chapter of West Virginians for Life set up an Elegant Tea for girls in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8. It was held at the Homestead Restaurant in Berkeley Spring where the girls stepped in from the winter cold into a warmly lit party room and were treated like royalty, all at no charge.
Members of the WVFL group welcomed the girls by telling them of their God-given value. The ecumenical team presenting the tea encouraged them to save the gift of sexual intimacy for their eventual spouse.
Tea was served in real teacups, and the food was fancy, including star-shaped sandwiches and lightly-fried asparagus spears. A local dance troupe dramatized the extreme peer pressure to dress without modesty. The book, The Princess and the Kiss, by Bishop, was the "ice breaker" prize, and was animatedly read aloud to the girls. A local vocalist presented the song, “The Promise."
Coffee and book samples were provided for parents and relatives in a separate ‘parent’s corner.’ This was stocked by a local Christian bookstore, ‘Word to the Wise’.
Martinsburg OB-Gyn, Krista Hopkins, MD, spoke candidly about the rapid spread of sexually transmitted disease and crisis pregnancies. Tea guests asked questions anonymously by writing the questions and placing them in a basket for Dr. Hopkins.
The organizers were Susan McBee, Carol Ambrose, Vickie Saenz and Linda Hopkins. Before presenting each girl with a fine-china chocolate-filled cup and saucer for their own, the organizers underscored that safe adults, such as themselves, want to help the girls negotiate the path of sexual integrity.
More events are planned for older girls, and for boys. Suggestions are invited at: carol149@aol.com and 1-877-484 5060.
